I followed with great interest the launch of the sixth assessment report Working Group 1 (The Physical Science Basis) from the Intergovernmental Panel on ClimateChange (IPCC) on August 9th. The problems with the SPM are similar those from the previous fifth assessment report which prompted me to write a post in 2013.
The Intergovernmental Panel on ClimateChange has concluded that CDR will be needed, alongside deep emissions cuts, to limit global warming to 1.5 But, in 2013, the parties to the London Protocol adopted an amendment that is intended to be. The 2013 amendment has not yet entered into force.
And since the first IPCC estimates published in 2013, we have learned a lot and have gotten much better at estimating remaining carbon budgets. How have these estimates changed since previous reports? IPCC reported carbon budgets for the first time in 2013. in 2018, but they represent a significant update since AR5 in 2013.
To meet emissions goals and avoid the worst impacts of climatechange, this trend will need to accelerate over the coming decades. However the long term drop in per person gasoline use is likely due to fuel economy and greenhouse gas standards that have made gasoline vehicles more efficient over the prior decades.
A friend asked me if a discussion paper published on Statistics Norway’s website, ‘ To what extent are temperature levels changing due to greenhouse gas emissions? ’, was purposely timed for the next climate summit ( COP28 ). I don’t know the answer to his question. But this discussion paper is problematic for sure.
Instead, they chose to hide the structural uncertainty in the MSU retrievals (the TMT trends for 1979-2013 in UAH v5.5 TLT trends for 1979-2013 were 0.14± 0.05 McNider, "Satellite greenhouse signal", Nature , vol. ClimaticChange , vol. But McNider and Christy chose not to do that. and RSS v3.3 and 0.08 +/- 0.05
For example, home deliveries in some areas may cut climate-warming emissions compared to driving in a personal vehicle to purchase items in person. The share of online transactions among total US sales grew from just under six percent in 2013 to around 15 percent in 2021, according to the Census Bureau’s Annual Retail Trade Survey.
Japan ) and a second in Yokosuka in 2019 ( Yokosuka Climate Case ). In the 2019 case, the judgments focused on the procedural aspect of the replacement of the coal-fired power plant and discussion of the climate issues was limited. The court viewed climatechange as an uncertain future danger.
And across the United States, the transportation sector is now the largest source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Mitigation bank and exchange programs (MBEx) present a promising opportunity to achieve the significant VMT and GHG reductions necessary to meet the states climate goals. miles per day ).
The global climate crisis requires immediate action, and we can start here at home in our Commonwealth, where we produce more than one percent of global greenhouse gases annually. Climatechange is a global issue, but Pennsylvanians know that the local impacts are increasingly severe. Peduto was selected for the U.S.
Our latest report has modeled what is actually possible if federal and provincial governments take public transit seriously as a tool to fight climatechange. There were fewer buses in service in peak periods across Canada in 2022 than there were in 2013, a year when transit systems served 2.7 million fewer people.
But this also raises other questions: 1) Can we expect the season to continue to lengthen as global warming from increasing concentration of globally well mixed greenhouse gas (GWM-GHG) continues to warm the Atlantic SSTs? 2013 ; Sobel et al. 2021 ), and changes in the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC).
Land-Use and ClimateChange Growing urban populations are accelerating land-use change (LUC) around the globe, as witnessed in the Front Range of Colorado 1–3. In recent history, we have witnessed LUC exacerbating climatechange due to disturbed soils, development of greenhouse gas (GHG) producing land uses, and more 4.
The CPDW is thought to be affected by the shift in the westerly winds around Antarctica which have increased in recent decades due to a combination of greenhouse gas forcing and the polar ozone hole ( Miller et al, 2006 ). The last major revision (BedMap2) was in 2013 ( Fretwell et al., 375-393, 2013. 2020) or Sadai et al.
of solar correlations in all manner of climate records ( and non-climate records ) has been a staple of the ABC (‘Anything-but-CO 2 ‘) crowd since the 1980s. 4171-4176, 2013. Gundermann, "Solar cycle lengths and climate: A reference revisited", Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics , vol. Laut, and J.
The Alberta government is opposing any meaningful policy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions that the federal government is attempting to implement. We need to hold polluters accountable for driving climatechange. Of course, these are just three examples that happened to cross my desk within an hour of each other.
Extremes : Back in 2012, the literature assessed by AR5 connecting changes in extremes to climatechange was scant. Don’t mention the hiatus: Readers will probably remember the prominence of the ‘hiatus’ in the discussions around the AR5 report (written in 2013) (see here , here , or here ). 1, SPM, AR5.
United States case, plaintiffs sought an order directing the federal government to slash the nation’s greenhouse gas emissions. The plaintiffs had asked the court to issue a “remedial plan” that would require Montana to take many steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and fossil fuel production in the state.
On March 9, 2023, the Japanese Supreme Court refused to hear the first climatechange litigation brought before it without specifying substantive reasons. The Plaintiffs in the Kobe Civil Case claimed a violation of personal rights to life, bodily integrity and health on account of climatechange. Kobelco Power Kobe No.
Their annual ‘State of the Global Climate’ report indicated that the accelerating pace of climatechange was to blame for acidification and that the melting of ice sheets contributed to pushing sea level rises to new heights in 2021. Oceans bear much of the brunt of the warming climate and increasing climate emissions.
Of all the troubling headlines emerging from the release of the Intergovernmental Panel on ClimateChange (IPCC) WG1 report, one warning will surely dominate headlines in the next days and weeks: Earth is likely to reach the crucial 1.5? Guest commentary by Malte Meinshausen, Zebedee Nicholls, and Piers Forster.
Just days before the conference she was featured in an article where she attempted to shift blame away from the fossil fuel industry by saying that oil companies can only decarbonize as fast as the rest of the economy – a comment that completely ignores the fact that the oil and gas industry is Canada’s largest source of greenhouse gas emissions.
To no one’s surprise it contained zero funding to address climatechange – not even for clean energy – which the document referred to multiple times. As a result, between 2005 and 2017 greenhouse gas pollution from Ontario’s electricity system dropped by 93 per cent. It will be something to watch.
Likely climatechange impacts in New Zealand | Ministry for the Environment, 2019). The science behind climatechange. Climatechange, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on ClimateChange (IPCC), is the noticeable change in the climate across time (decades or longer).
Ministers from poor, vulnerable countries call on those from rich, industrialized countries to do more: reduce their high levels of greenhouse gas emissions and assist people in the Global south to better cope with the climate disasters that keep mounting. Because the collapse of a U.N. Some baby steps, some backward steps.
Ontario Power Generation has been quietly selling off Clean Energy Credits from its hydro and nuclear power to businesses in the United States since about 2013. But it actually just gives the company an excuse to continue its regular operations, without decreasing its own greenhouse gas emissions. The secrecy of the scheme.
L&D has a specific meaning in climate talks that may not be obvious to anyone not immersed in the process: harms caused by climatechange that are not avoided by adaptation. Given any particular trajectory of realized climatechange (which of course depends on how fast emissions are cut), adaptation measures (e.g.,
Since 2007, only 2009, 2013 and 2014 had more ice at the end of the melt season. Unless and until we get a handle on climatechange, these trends are likely to continue. As a result, this year’s sea ice minimum left the Arctic Ocean with a higher-than-usual amount of ice coverage when compared to the last fifteen years.
In 2010, the SEC published interpretive guidance (2010 Guidance) for public companies regarding disclosure requirements relating to climatechange matters.[[N:Securities N:Securities and Exchange Commission, Guidance Regarding Disclosure Related to ClimateChange (Release Nos. iii) the physical impacts of climatechange.
Exposition Metro Line Construction Authority (2013) 57 Cal.4th My August 9, 2013 post on the case can be found here. CEQA analysis of GHG/climatechange impacts is different – and difficult. My December 18, 2015 post on the case can be found here. Baseline basics are clarified. The Supreme Court, in Tomlinson v.
On May 21, 2024, the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) released its long-awaited advisory opinion on climatechange. There was little discussion, either in the written statements or at the oral hearing, of so-called “marine geoengineering” activities that seek to use the ocean to combat climatechange.
On December 28, 2018, California adopted comprehensive amendments to the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) Guidelines , which include a suite of provisions aimed at improving the analysis of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and climatechange impacts in state environmental reviews. GHG Emissions Analysis.
These days the United States’ federal government is promoting coal and backtracking on climate ambition and the European Union is no longer cutting its greenhouse gases emissions. So, who is leading the fight against climatechange ? China, India and South Korea are. . Photo credits: Flickr, Travel Oriented.
Scientists say climatechange has severe heatwaves more likely in South and Southeast Asia. By Joydeep Gupta As climatechange makes heatwaves more frequent and severe in South Asia, India’s heat action plans offer pathways for adaptation, but experts say they lack the necessary focus on vulnerable populations.
To no one’s surprise it contained zero funding to address climatechange – not even for clean energy – which the document referred to multiple times. As a result, between 2005 and 2017 greenhouse gas pollution from Ontario’s electricity system dropped by 93 per cent. Last week, Ontario released its annual budget.
Day 3 was “Finance Day”: how does the world pay for the necessary changes both to reduce emissions (“mitigation”) and to adapt to climatechange (“adaptation”). The chief topic across dozens and dozens of venues was how do less developed countries afford transitions and climate shocks. by Andrew Barton.
Rising sea levels, a consequence of climatechange, pose a significant threat to coastal communities worldwide. Advocate for climatechange policies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and slow sea level rise. 4] IPCC, “ClimateChange 2014: Synthesis Report. 213–232, 2019. [4] 5] K.
We knew that global greenhouse gases emission from energy had been peaking for the past three years – largely thanks to China – but now, here is another series of nails in the coffins of coal and oil. We need to change our whole economic system… But these news are still great news. Yes, you read that right.
On June 25, 2013, President Obama delivered a major speech on the topic of climatechange. In it he outlined a broad policy agenda aimed at addressing the challenges posed by the changingclimate.
United States case, plaintiffs sought an order directing the federal government to slash the nation’s greenhouse gas emissions. The plaintiffs had asked the court to issue a “remedial plan” that would require Montana to take many steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and fossil fuel production in the state.
The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recently issued a final ruling on a landmark program to phasedown the production and consumption of potent climatechange contributing hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). GWP’s convert the amounts of other greenhouse gases to the equivalent amount of CO2. percent of 1989 CFC levels.
Scope 4 greenhouse gas emissions are not new. They date to 2013 when the Greenhouse Gas Protocol identified “avoided emissions” as emission reductions that occur outside of a product’s lifecycle or value chain, but as a result of the use of that product.
Times have changed. Climatechange, CO2 emissions and our impact on the environment are all hot topics constantly in the media and the science is telling us we must act now to protect our world.
That could be changing, though, as modern-day climate activists like the Valve Turners vigorously protest industry and government inaction in the face of increasingly dire climatechange threats. In 2013, Massachusetts District Attorney C. Although no U.S. and one in Minnesota (a Valve Turners’ case). Pembina Cty.
