On November 8, the California Air Resources Board, or CARB, is slated to consider approving amendments to California’s Low Carbon Fuel Standard. Over its short lifetime, the program has already transformed many segments of the fuels market. This is a playbook we’ve seen before.
That 2013 headline resulted from the first effort to quantify emissions from the ‘carbon majors’ —fossilfuel companies and cement manufacturers whose businesses have contributed an outsized amount of heat-trapping gases to the atmosphere. Nearly two-thirds of industrial heat-trapping emissions can be traced to just 90 entities.
Rooftop solar costs in 2020 were a third of what they had been in 2010. In 2020, the cost of single-axis utility scale solar was only a fifth of what it was in 2010. Cheaper renewable energy attracts private investment and makes limits on fossilfuels more feasible. Wind power costs fell by half from 2008 to 2021.
The dangerous impacts of a warming, fossil-fuel dependent world span from wildfires capable of destroying entire towns to cancer-causing air pollution that afflicts the next generation. The climate crisis is one of humanity’s most complex conflicts yet. Unfortunately, when it comes to climate change, the truth is often obscured.
Burning fossilfuels, cutting down forests, raising livestock, making cement, and using synthetic fertilizers are among the actions that have increased the amount of heat-trapping gases in the atmosphere to the point that the planet’s basic functions are coming undone. Those discrepancies can be illustrated in numbers.
In its early years, between 2005 and 2010, the RFS helped launch the massive scaleup of corn ethanol that established 10 percent ethanol as the de facto standard for US gasoline. After 2010, bio-based diesel fuels (biodiesel and renewable diesel) have been the main beneficiary of the RFS.
We know that burning fossilfuels is the main cause of anthropogenic climate change, and that climate change is the source of adverse impacts on communities and even regional and national economies. Instead, it has been to stem and confuse the flow of information about climate change to the public and political leaders.
For decades the fossilfuel lobby has masterfully weakened, derailed, and outright blocked government climate policy. The fossilfuel lobby meddles with Canadian politics and inserts itself into international climate change politics and diplomacy. CAPP is trying to buy and build the social license (ie.
Last year, the Environmental Working Group, a Washington-based research organization, counted 476 harmful blooms in 41 states, five times higher than in 2010. . In Michigan the number of reports about blooms received by the state Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy has increased six-fold since 2010. Saginaw Bay, Lake St.
Last week world leaders gathered in New York for the UN Climate Ambition Summit where countries shared concrete action they’ve taken to phase out fossilfuels. There, the conversation was grounded in science, with leaders such as California’s Governor Newsom saying “The climate crisis is a fossilfuel crisis.
In order to reduce emissions, we must phase out fossilfuels—oil, coal and gas—and move towards renewable energy and less plastic and petrochemical production since these products, so dangerous as ocean pollutants, are made from oil. Individual nations, like Vietnam, made new commitments as well.
They pointed to the fact that since 2010 the cost of solar, wind and battery technology has decreased by up to 85%. The report makes clear that we urgently need the political will to leave fossilfuels in the ground, advance renewable energy and invest in nature-based carbon dioxide removal through forest and ecosystem protection.”.
This is another in a years-long attempt by Republicans to reverse the unconventional shale gas fracking moratorium adopted by the Commission in various forms starting in 2010. Tom Wolf’s job-killing, punitive crusade against the profitable production and exportation of natural gas and other homegrown fossilfuels.”
In my last post I discussed the Commission’s remarkably radical – and challenging – headline recommendation on mitigation, a global phaseout of fossilfuels. But no part of their mandate or report matches this description of “stuff you wish you didn’t have to think about, but realize you must” better than SRM. So, what happens now?
EIA -- Reuters: With Years Of High Natural Gas Prices Ahead, LNG Buyers Covet Long-Term Deals -- Reuters: EU Considers Push For FossilFuel Phasedown Ahead Of COP28 Climate Summit Other States/National/International -- U.S. EIA: Coal And Natural Gas Power Plants Will Account For 98% Of U.S.

Japan’s dependency on fossilfuel s had been slightly declining until 2010. But the country changed course as a result of the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami, which led to the forced shutdown of nuclear power plants and greater reliance on fossilfuels.
And this change comes in part from increasing diffusion of fossilfuels. Take a look at David Sattherthwaite's 2010 tough review of my 2010 Climatopolis book. John is optimistic about our future; "The share of the world population in extreme poverty is plummeting. People who used to hoe by hand now use tractors."
In 2010, a major climate change law passed by the House died in the Senate, but 12 years later, a major climate law passed both Houses. If cellphone prices had dropped as fast since 2010 as the cost of power from solar panels, you could buy a new iPhone for about thirty bucks today. But the overall picture is consistent.
Thermal coal is the world’s dirtiest fossilfuel and increases global carbon pollution putting all countries at risk from the disastrous impacts of climate change. . Coal power generation must be reduced to 80 per cent below 2010 levels by 2030 and be phased out before 2040 in order to meet targets set out by the Paris Agreement. .

Can it serve as a bridge to moving away from fossilfuels? Just look at the increasing amount of tension and war-like conditions currently developing between local communities and their government over water supply in politically unstable areas such as the Middle East. Questions that often arise are: Is it safe? By Allen Smith.
Yaw noted the IEO would be modeled after Pennsylvania’s Independent Fiscal Office , which was created by Act 120 of 2010, and Act 100 of 2016. Yaw did not mention renewable energy in this announcement.] Obviously, that doesn't add up quite, but there's a little bit of renewables included in that. “We
Few people realize that Germany has actually increased its fossilfuel combustion capacity over the 20 years of its landmark renewable energy program from 2001 to the present. We can see the same impact of variable energies in Germany. We need to respect our grid authorities. link] [24] In re Erving Industries, Inc., 354 (Bankr.
by 2020 against a 2010 baseline. The original NDC considered an unrealistic 5% GDP growth and an energy growth based entirely on fossilfuels – which is extremely unlikely in a country with a significant representation of clean energy. The NPCC establishes a binding commitment to reduce GHG emissions between 36.1% In PSB et al.
Hence many soil scientists had for years been calling for a third survey, particularly those who are representatives to China’s top legislature, the National People’s Congress (NPC), or its top political advisory body, the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPCCC). Forty years of change. Rapid acidification.
Healey issued the CID in connection with an investigation into unfair or deceptive acts or practices in trade or commerce with respect to fossilfuel products and securities. The appellate court agreed with the Superior Court that the students had failed to demonstrate special standing to challenge management of charitable funds.
Lest one thinks this disconnect is a failure of the global climate architecture, the failure lies much closer to home—in the domestic politics in the US and many other countries that continue to favor the interests of the rich and powerful , and fossilfuel companies, at the expense of the health and safety of everyone else and the planet.
By Anders Lorenzen The British oil and gas giant BP , which, until recently, has been one of the oil and gas giants with the most ambitious clean energy plans, has joined the chorus of fossilfuel giants moving away from net zero. Why are fossilfuel giants abandoning net-zero? Will BP stay the course?
Politically powerful farm lobbies, preferring voluntary measures to curb nutrient pollution, have held off oversight under the Clean Water Act and other statutes. Tyler Larson was diagnosed in 2010 with neurofibroma sarcoma, which resulted in tumors on nerve endings. Coulter has a particularly keen interest. He was 19 when he died.
This post was originally published on the Law & Political Economy Blog as “How Environmental Law Created a World Awash in Toxic Chemicals.” Even as we work to end the use of fossilfuels as an energy source, we cannot stand by and watch as these same companies shift their production to plastics and petrochemicals.
Wolf to “unleash PA’s full potential to power the free world” and “end his job-killing, punitive crusade against the production and exportation of Pennsylvania natural gas and other abundant fossilfuels.” “You Read more here.
