Regulation may have made a difference, since coal requires more extensive pollution controls than competing fuels. In 2010, U.S. Coal began to really plunge in 2012, three years before Obama’s Clean Power Plan was issued. But this could only have a contributing factor. Probably the most obvious cause was fracking.
