Last week, I joined my colleagues at COP28 in Dubai , as negotiators and civil society push for a fossilfuel phaseout to meet climate goals. The industry is pushing a narrative that misleadingly calls out emissions , not fossilfuels as the problem. Global net anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions 1990–2019.
After 30 years of international negotiations failing to mention the root cause of the climate crisis, the acknowledgement that we must phase out all fossilfuels and massively scale up renewable energy in order to effectively tackle the climate crisis, was both long overdue and extremely significant.
This week’s episode of What’s Up With Water covers what to expect at COP27, new research on the link between water and the fossilfuel industry in Texas, and an update on Jackson, Mississippi’s failing water system. In 2009, wealthy countries promised to deliver $100 billion annually to poorer countries.
Almost all plastic is made from fossilfuels. In fact, plastic and petrochemicals (chemicals made from oil and gas) have been called the fossilfuel industry’s Plan B – a way to prop up demand for oil and gas as the world stops using it for transportation and energy in order to meet climate commitments.
Consider IPAA’s website Energy in Depth (EID), which attacks UCS and other climate accountability experts while promoting disinformation, such as claims that fossil gas and fracking benefits the environment.
Demonstrators took to the streets at the 2009 global climate convention in Copenhagen. Adaptation, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and accounting for climate damages will be prominent topics at the UN climate convention in November. Advocates are focusing on the Glasgow meeting to highlight water’s indispensable climate role.
These higher costs are being driven by a major overreliance on natural gas, which has sharply spiked in price and is currently the dominant fuel source in the US for both home heating and electricity generation. These claims just add to the deluge of greenwashing and disinformation from the fossilfuel industry.
T he California Air Resources Board reports that in 2021, heavy-duty trucking was responsible for over 30 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions, making up roughly 10% of the state’s total emissions.
Given the limitations of the global carbon budget, he suggested that only a limited number of fossil-fuel development projects can proceed and used a balancing test to determine which projects may have benefits justifying the costs. Section 4.15(1) Four Key Takeaways. Climate Change Was Recognized as Grounds for the Denial. In the U.S.,
And this change comes in part from increasing diffusion of fossilfuels. My 2009 piece; " Urban Growth and Climate Change" fleshes this out. I discuss this point at length in chapter 1 of my 2021 Yale Press book and in the 2009 piece "Urban Growth and Climate Change" linked to above. Here is 2012 video where I elaborate.
Hausfather admits I am correct that wood fuel is far worse for people and wildlife than fossilfuels but then adds that biomass "is quite controversial and opposed by most environmental advocates." more land than fossilfuels, but those numbers are incorrect, and Hausfather has cherry-picked them, while ignoring better data.
“Every time a company or organization installs an energy-efficient heating, cooling, or lighting system, it’s another step for Pennsylvania and the nation toward independence from fossilfuels. And it helps lower greenhouse gas emissions to slow climate change and its negative effects.” Sullivan in 1978.
This is a positive development, given that the applicability of the 2009 Gas Directive to hydrogen has been discussed controversially in the past. Accordingly, the Directive as well as the Regulation differentiate between rules applicable to natural gas and gases more broadly defined. 2 (11) rGD).
One of the great failures of climate finance has been that of developed countries to furnish the USD 100 billion per year by 2020 that they promised to developing countries back in 2009 to support climate action. Fossilfuels alone – coal, oil and gas – account for over 75% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
As Russia seeks new clients for its construction technology and fossilfuels, and with Pakistan desperate for a secure and cheap supply of natural gas, the visit could lay the foundations for Russia to build a pipeline to transport natural gas from Karachi to Lahore. “My Increasing demand, decreasing supply.
By 2009, a study by Chinese scientists found that cadmium was going into China’s topsoil at around 0.004mg/kg per year. It contains three times as much as the 830 billion tonnes found in the atmosphere, and 240 times as much as the 10 billion tonnes emitted by fossilfuel burning every year.
Brazil’s National Policy on Climate Change ( NPCC and subsequent regulation ) was adopted in 2009 based on Brazil’s international commitments with the UNFCCC. Omissions from the Brazilian government on climate policy. OC has filed the petition to push for increased climate action in Brazil. by 2020 against a 2010 baseline.
The result is that countries in the Global South have not been granted the necessary funds to adapt to climate disasters or to effectively reduce their own greenhouse gas emissions. When you account for inflation, the new target of $300 billion barely exceeds the previous global commitment that was set in 2009.
cities move toward their greenhouse gas reduction goals via a cleaner national electric grid, increased vehicle and building electrification, and new distributed renewable energy resources. economy and to significantly contribute to its greenhouse gas reduction efforts. Still, how does a local government tap in? green banks”).

And since the amount of power generated by wind and solar fluctuates more than typical fossil-fuel generation, the grid needs to be ready to shift power from one area to another. But two appellate-court decisions strictly limited this authority: A 2009 Fourth Circuit decision, Piedmont Environmental Council v.
We all know that to successfully address climate change we need to phase out fossilfuels and switch to electric power. Unfortunately, the current Ontario government’s plan is to burn more fossil gas to generate power. . Between 2009 and 2016, Ontario built over 2000 MW of solar power and about 3000 MW of wind power.
Notably, in the same proposal, the Commission has also included screening criteria for gaseous fossilfuels. The Regulation sets a time limit on the inclusion of nuclear energy but not on fossilfuels and grants the Commission special powers to rule on nuclear taxonomy compliance.
Last week world leaders gathered in New York for the UN Climate Ambition Summit where countries shared concrete action they’ve taken to phase out fossilfuels. There, the conversation was grounded in science, with leaders such as California’s Governor Newsom saying “The climate crisis is a fossilfuel crisis.
For decades the fossilfuel lobby has masterfully weakened, derailed, and outright blocked government climate policy. The fossilfuel lobby meddles with Canadian politics and inserts itself into international climate change politics and diplomacy. The biggest barrier to climate action in Canada is the oil and gas lobby.
greenhouse gas emissions by 50 to 52 percent below 2005 levels by 2030. will need to rapidly decarbonize its electricity generating system, replacing fossilfuel power plants with renewable energy systems. It will also need to electrify various end-use sectors that currently rely on fossilfuels (e.g.,
That means we’ll need to quickly add additional clean energy policies and policies to phase out fossilfuels just to meet our 2030 goals. c) of the Paris Agreement calls for “ Making finance flows consistent with a pathway towards low greenhouse gas emissions and climate-resilient development.” Article 2.1(c)

But after 2009, the trends began to diverge. 2022 Natural Gas House Explosion In Dauphin County [PaEN] -- Guest Essay: My Hometown Shows The Benefits Of The FossilFuel Industry Come At A Tremendous Cost - Gov. Shapiro, Let's Hold Them Accountable - Support The Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative - By Rev.
2] [3] [4] The desperation of climate activism parallels the rate of loss (and likelihood of climate injustice) predicted by the IPCC and climate scientists, if governments fail to curtail greenhouse gas emissions. 24] Jose Esteban Muñoz, Cruising Utopias: The Then and There of Queer Futurity, (New York: NYU Press, 2009), 12. In 2009, the U.S. The fossilfuel sector and its industrial allies block curbs to greenhouse gas emissions. According to assessments by five federal agencies and every state in the Great Lakes basin, Lake Erie is among the country’s most visible examples of waters fouled by toxic blooms. There are many others.
Trump’s second victory is very likely to increase fossilfuel production, and he has also pledged to “rescind all unspent funds under the Inflation Reduction Act ’’. The act aims to create green jobs, reduce fossilfuel consumption and switch to clean energy.
Mitigating Greenhouse Gas Emissions in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic Transportation A Cap-and-Invest Approach . In recent years, states in New England and the mid-Atlantic region have made significant progress in reducing climate change-inducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the electricity generation sector. [1].
Among the many attacks in President Trumps Day 1 Executive Order on unleashing American (fossil) energy , is a directive to EPA administrator Zeldin to reevaluate the agencys bedrock 2009 scientific determination of the harms caused by heat-trapping emissions and submit recommendations within 30 days (i.e. this week).
Under the 1992 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), every country on Earth is treaty-bound to “avoid dangerous climate change”, and find ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions globally in an equitable way. above pre-industrial levels, and greenhouse gas emissions are still on an upward trend.
The project is controversial due to its contribution to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and its location on the North Slope of Alaska, which happens to be the largest undisturbed track of public land in the U.S. and an area that is highly sensitive to climate change. See Karuk Tribe of California v. USFS (9th Cir. 2012) ; Cal. USDA, (9th Cir.
