California has done well in terms of total emission reductions – about a 10% reduction from 2009 to 2019. Electric power related emissions went down about 40% from 2009 to 2019. For that reason, I’ve used 2009-2019 as my comparison period. What’s the Overall Verdict? The verdict on this issue seems very clear.

The California LCFS Program was adopted in 2009 as one of the key measures to reduce GHG emissions in California under AB 32. The Draft Scoping Plan states that CARB will initiate a rulemaking on the LCFS to ensure it continues to support low-carbon fuels that will displace petroleum fuels. [1].

If Germany didn’t count emissions-producing and land-intensive fuels like biomass and biofuels as renewable, which most environmental groups, even Greenpeace, believe it shouldn’t, the share of its electricity from non-emitting, non-hydro renewables is just 34 percent. Today, the US uses just 0.5 percent of its land for energy.

Except for 2009, the financial crisis year, and 2020, the pandemic period, aviation has grown every year between 2006 – 2024 and preceding that. In some cases, for example, where it is made from biofuel and involves taking up agricultural land generally used for food production, the sustainability element drastically declines.
