UCS is advocating for the US to commit to cutting its emissions at least 70% below 2005 levels by 2035, a level that can be met if we implement additional strong policies (beyond the Inflation Reduction Act and other existing federal and state policies) to accelerate the deployment of renewable energy and the phase out of fossil fuels.

Minnesotans are facing concurrent crises of climate change, high energy prices and inflation, and the inequitable public health impacts of fossil fuel air pollution. Renewable energy will help with all of that—but we need a grid that is designed for wind and solar instead of having to rely on expensive coal and gas plants.

But rather than ramping up the use of polluting fossil gas, this is the perfect moment for the province to transition to clean and safe renewable energy. But the agency was caught skewing information , suppressing modeling that supported renewable energy options and showed that their use would actually reduce consumers’ costs. .

Earlier this year, the MPSC approved a settlement agreement on Consumers Energy’s integrated resource plan that commits the company to retire all its remaining coal-fired power plants by 2025, construct no new fossil gas infrastructure, and build large amounts of new solar power between now and 2040.

The Premier had made it very clear in past statements that she is biased against renewable energy, and instead favours projects that cause pollution, limit Alberta’s future economic growth, and contribute to global climate change. Wind and solar energy are the least expensive sources of energy in Canada.

These results are consistent with other decarbonization studies.
