This could be met from a variety of sources—including pollution fees on fossil fuel companies, the elimination of fossil fuel subsidies, and wealth taxes on the richest people. Despite important gains in renewable energy, there is still more progress needed and fossil fuels continue to expand at odds with this agreement.

Minnesotans are facing concurrent crises of climate change, high energy prices and inflation, and the inequitable public health impacts of fossil fuel air pollution. Renewable energy will help with all of that—but we need a grid that is designed for wind and solar instead of having to rely on expensive coal and gas plants.

North Carolina today gets over half of its power from fossil fuels, about 25% from coal and 33% from natural gas. Solar is at 5% and wind is under 1l%. Regarding solar power, at least 55% must come from utility-owned facilities, while up to 45% can be purchased from small third-party generators.

Wind and solar energy are the least expensive sources of energy in Canada. The cost of solar power has been reduced by 90 per cent over the past 10 years. Because the “feedstock” for both wind and solar are free, the cost of these energy sources decreases the more that are built.
