CMIP6: Not-so-sudden stratospheric cooling

Real Climate

In the band of radiation where CO2 absorbs a lot (~15 $mu$m), increasing CO2 levels in the troposphere make it ever harder for those photons to get to the stratosphere or above. The basic concept is easy to grasp though. The upper atmosphere is different from the troposphere in that pressure is much less, and it’s very dry.

A distraction due to errors, misunderstanding and misguided Norwegian statistics

Real Climate

In other words, the debate about the role of the sun is old, and the explanation about the importance of sunspots has not stood the test of time, something I have described in the textbook ‘ Solar Activity and Earth’s Climate ‘ from 2002.

Orange glow and plants below: Wildfire smoke’s impact on crops

HumanNature

It was the Coal Seam Fire that erupted outside Glenwood Springs, Colorado in 2002, when I was in middle school. Smoke-driven changes in radiation have real world consequences beyond making for good film fodder and beautiful sunsets. For one, plants rely on solar radiation to grow, and the U.S. Since so many major U.S.

Cosmic challenge: protecting supercomputers from an extraterrestrial threat

Physics World

The impact of cosmic radiation is not always as trivial as determining who wins a Super Mario game, or as positive in its outcome. The culprit, again, was most likely cosmic radiation. But Formaggio says as coherence times increase, radiation effects will become more significant. “We 10.1109/TNS.2010.2083687 2010.2083687 ).

Antarctic extreme events: ‘All-time records are being shattered not from decades ago, but from the last few years and months’

Frontiers

For example, Antarctica acts to cool our planet by reflecting solar radiation back to space by virtue of the brightness of its snow surface. In the ocean, 19 marine heatwaves have been recorded between 2002 and 2018. In the Arctic this has led to regional warming four times faster than the global average.

Guest Essay: March 28, 1979 -- Three Mile Island

PA Environment Daily

Mankind has had lots of fears through history, but as Dick put it later, radiation is one of "the worst fears of modern man." The State Department of Environmental Resources did regulate radiation, but only from X-rays in doctors’ and dentists’ offices. That drug blunts the effect of radiation poisoning to the thyroid gland.

Solar Geoengineering in the News — Again and Again

Legal Planet

This new phase continues a small (about $10M/year) research program authorized by Congress since 2002, and follows a prior phase of modeling and balloon observations. Several additional announcements related to solar geoengineering research are expected soon.
