In 2020, coal producers received 670 million reais in subsidies and, as laid out under the 2002 energy management law , the CDE should continue to subsidise them until 2027. But a request for an amendment to this bill is seeking to extend the deadline to 2035.

It has also been reported that between the years of 2002 and 2018 more than 20 million hectares of tropical forests were cleared in the Amazon purely for beef production. For example, the rate of deforestation in indigenous territories has increased to 71% since the Brazilian president Jair Bolsanro was elected [4].
